Rooted in Capability,
not in Grade,
Guided by Potential

At Tej Acton Academy, academic rigor is built through a balance of mastery, application, and reflection. Learners strengthen core skills daily through self-paced, mastery-based work in math, reading, and writing. They apply and deepen that learning through hands-on projects and public exhibitions, where they explain their thinking and defend their choices. To ensure this growth remains strong and on track, we use MAP assessments for our upper elementary and middle school learners as an external reference point—not to drive learning, but to inform support and measure progress over time. Together, these elements ensure learning is both deep and disciplined, while remaining meaningful and learner-owned.

At Tej Acton, our learners are never constrained or defined by traditional grade levels. For example, an eleven year old might take on high school level reading and writing while continuing to strengthen foundational math concepts. And a six-year-old might be remarkably talented in math and science, while still developing the social and emotional skills needed to manage emotional frustration or navigate group dynamics. These emotional and interpersonal capacities grow beautifully with the right guidance and within the support of a mixed-age studio.

In a world where answers are instant and machines grow smarter, Tej Acton learners practice the deeply human work of thinking together each day through Socratic discussions in the studio and in nature. They listen closely, ask better questions, wrestle with ideas, and speak with courage and care. This daily practice builds motivation, sound judgment, empathy, and wisdom that no algorithm can replace.

The learning design follows how understanding develops over time: through mastery, meaningful application, reflection, and ownership.

Building the Human Skills Technology cannot Replace

  • 1

Adaptive learning platforms support self-paced mastery in reading, writing, and mathematics, allowing learners to build strong foundations while taking ownership of their progress.

  • 2

Hands-on, project-based quests develop problem definition, systems thinking, and creative application skills that matter when answers are no longer scarce but judgment is.

  • 3

Daily Socratic discussions in history, literature, and self-governance strengthen critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly and confidently.

  • 4

Clear community agreements and learner covenants build accountability, collaboration, and strong interpersonal skills, helping children form healthy relationships and resolve conflict with integrity.

  • 5

Learner ownership and meaningful choice build agency by teaching children to set goals, manage time, and take responsibility for their learning, developing confidence, independence, and a strong sense of purpose.

Learn to Learn

Socratic Discussions and self paced challenges equip young heroes to be independent lifelong learners.

Learn to Do

Hands-on Quests for Science, Entrepreneurship, and the Arts prepare children for Apprenticeships and real-world challenges.

Learn to Be

The Hero's Journey, relational covenants and real world consequences transform difficult decisions into virtuous habits. Through morning wellness activities such as reflection, a nature walk, yoga, or meditation, learners are better equipped to understand the powerful role they play in the world.

Learn to Know

Develop a deep understanding and proficiency in the core academic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics, laying a solid groundwork for future learning and success.

Measuring Mastery

At Tej Acton Academy, we measure mastery in ways that honor how children actually learn, while maintaining clear expectations and consistent accountability. Progress is visible, standards are clear, and learners are responsible for both their academic growth and their character.

  • 1

Learners track progress through mastery badges in core skills such as reading, writing, math, and spelling, alongside character growth through Servant Leader badges. In our Discovery Studio, learners take the nationally normed MAP Growth assessment annually in Reading, Language, Math, and Science. Results are used to inform goal setting, guide instruction, and track growth over time, not to rank or compare learners.

  • 2

At the end of each three to six week sprint, learners present their work in public exhibitions. These exhibitions require learners to explain their thinking, defend their choices, and demonstrate depth of understanding to families and peers, mentors and experts.

  • 3

Self management and self governance are assessed through regular peer feedback and reflection, helping learners build accountability, collaboration, and the habit of evaluating their own growth, skills essential for long term independence and success.
